NSW bushfires: Dairy farmers impacted by fodder shortage, road blocks

BUSHFIRES in NSW have interrupted the supply of 70,000 litres of milk to leading processor Norco, its chief executive has revealed.

Michael Hampson said it was fortunate no dairies had been destroyed although Norco’s suppliers had experienced significant disruption with scorched paddocks and road closures.

He said the Taree region, 80km south of Port Macquarie, had been hit hard by the fires, but other districts further north in the Coffs Harbour and Casino regions had also been affected.

“It’s certainly been the most challenging bushfires in recent times. We’ve dealt with floods in the past, and they present their own challenges, but the fires have interrupted supply of about 70,000 litres,” Mr Hampson said.

“Road closures, the availability of tankers — all cause disruption in their own way. Fodder supply is also an issue.”

Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud last week announced federal support for those in need, with $1000 for eligible adults and $400 for eligible children.

“Obviously, we’d hope that the application process (for farmers to obtain assistance) is a relatively simple one,” Mr Hampson said.
