The Australian dairy industry is on a charm offensive in China this week in an effort to get more support for a Free Trade Agreement between the countries.
Dairy farmers and dignitaries including the Australian Ambassador to China will present at a number of events to promote the need for an agreement.
Farmer and president of lobby group Australian Dairy Farmers, Noel Campbell, says it is important that the Chinese don’t see his industry as a threat.
“They see the Australian continent and say ‘well, there is a massive amount of land there that can actually be utilised for dairy’ and we all know that isn’t the case.
“We’ve got a significant domestic market here where 55 per cent of our current product is actually going to domestic products.
“So we’re not going to all of a sudden flood their market and threaten their domestic industry. We just want to be part of the whole dairy chain.”
